In 1961, a young songwriter had moved to Nashville with a new song in hand. Willie Nelson sold “Crazy” to Patsy Cline’s team and it became an instant hit. The single made it to number two on the Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart and landed at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100, plus became Patsy’s signature song.
Born in Winchester, Virginia in 1932, Virginia Patterson Hensley, better known as Patsy Cline had a short, but impactful career as a country singer before her untimely death at 30 years-old in 1963. While her first four singles flopped, her national TV debut on Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts put “Walkin’ After Midnight” and Patsy on the track towards fame. She became the first solo female artists to be a member of the Grand Ole Opry and to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Patsy was one of the first country-pop cross over artists with a memorable voice and has inspired generations of vocalists including Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and k.d. lang.
As a vocal stylist, songwriter, bandleader, movie actor, and “outlaw,” Willie Nelson has made an impact across culture and throughout generations. Beginning his career as a DJ and playing in bands in Texas, songwriting was his first successful adventure with “Funny How Time Slips Away,” “Hello Walls,” and, of course, “Crazy.” He became a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1964. Some stand out songs from his career as a singer include “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain,” “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys,” and “Always On My Mind.” He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1993 and received a Kennedy Center Honor in 1998 and his legacy continues to grow.
