Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors

The Racine Theatre Guild will be holding open auditions for Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors on Monday, August 25 at 7 p.m. and Tuesday, August 26 at 7 p.m.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Sink your teeth into a comedy that’s perfect for all blood types. Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula meets his comedic match in a madcap, lightning-fast romp to Transylvania. When Lucy Westfeldt’s sister Mina falls ill with a mysterious disease of the blood, she and her meek fiancé, Jonathan Harker, enlist the help of famed vampire hunter Doctor Jean Van Helsing in a zany hunt for the devilish beast. In a nod to Monty Python, The 39 Steps, and The Carol Burnett Show, their hijinks are sure to get your heart racing and induce blood-curdling screams – of laughter!

ROLES / CASTING INFO

Please note that the play lovingly sends up gender “norms” in the style of some of our comedic heroes like Charles Ludlam and Monty Python, in that all characters can be played by actors of any gender, ethnicity, age, or type. Broad accents will be used in the show, but are not necessary for auditions.

Roles are open to individuals 18 and older. All actors, EXCEPT the one playing Dracula, will be playing multiple roles. There is the possibility of doubling parts being shifted and will be determined by auditions/callbacks.

  • Actor One: Harker / Suitors / Bosun / Gravedigger
    • Jonathan Harker: British Dialect – Prim and proper obsessive compulsive real-estate agent, easily frightened.
    • Three Suitors: Various Dialects – Lord Cavendish, Lord Windsor and Lord Havemercy, played simultaneously with the help of a puppet on either side of his head.
    • Bosun: Irish Dialect – A scurvy seaman who goes down with the ship in a storm.
  • Actor Two: Dr. Westfeldt / Renfield / Captain
    • Dr. Westfeldt: British Dialect – Lucy and Mina’s father…a blowhard, self important misogynist given to proclamations and posturing.
    • Renfield: Cockney Dialect – Insane patient of Dr. Westfeldt who lives to serve and loves to eat bugs.
    • Captain: Sea Captain Dialect – The scurvy salty captain of a doomed ship caught in a raging storm.
  • Actor Three: Lucy / Kitty/ Driver
    • Lucy Westfeldt: British Dialect – Brilliant, plucky, earth scientist daughter of Dr. Westfeldt. Full of energy and the spirit of adventure and often underestimated due to her beauty.
    • Kitty: Cockney Dialect – An elderly, dotty kleptomaniac patient of Dr. Westfeldt’s, she serves as a maid in his house. Think a less intelligent Mrs. Lovett.
    • Driver: Eastern European Dialect – A Transylvanian Uber-driver
  • Actor Four: Mina / Van Helsing
    • Mina Westfeldt: British Dialect – The less “attractive” less intelligent Westfeldt daughter, she lives in her sister Lucy’s shadow, and is desperate for attention.
    • Dr. Van Helsing: German Dialect – Brilliant and sturdy German vampire-hunting doctor. Deadly serious. She is accustomed to people not believing she is a real doctor. Strong, smart and bold. She is a woman of action.
  • Actor Five: Dracula
    • Count Dracula: Romanian Dialect – Sexy, rockstar presence. Narcissist whose greatest love is himself and his leather pants.
