Overview
Long before the world knew him as Muhammad Ali, this story of Cassius Clay, Jr. bobs and weaves through his early life. Growing up in Jim Crow-era Louisville, he steps into the ring with determination and drive to not be beaten by life or his opponents. With the support of his family, training from Officer Joe Martin, and his own hard work, Cassius fights his way onto the gold-medal stand and into the history books. It’s a reminder for us all to channel our inner champion and fight for what’s right.
Please note: And in this Corner: Cassius Clay represents moments in history steeped in segregation and racism. The play depicts a story, discussions, realities, and language that reflects that time. You will hear Cassius use the n-word once when he is reminding Eddie what some hateful people called him at a diner sit-in. The playwright, Idris Goodwin, uses this word to help the audience understand the reality of Cassius’ world and the harmful effect of racial slurs.
