The Drowsy Chaperone
The Racine Theatre Guild will be holding open auditions for The Drowsy Chaperone on Saturday, May 17 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and Sunday, May 18 from 6 – 8 p.m.
ABOUT THE SHOW
Dust off your favorite record, place a needle in a groove, and settle into your cozy armchair as you’re transported to the world of an imaginary 1928 musical, The Drowsy Chaperone. It’s a trip down one obsessed fan’s memories of all things Golden Age musical. His small, dingy apartment transforms into the setting for a big, extravagant wedding, packed with mistaken identities, larger-than-life characters, madcap hijinks, and flashy dance numbers on the way to the altar. Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Book and Best Original Score, it’s a toe tapping tribute to the love of musical theatre.
Those interested in auditioning MUST sign-up for an hour time slot by calling (262) 633-4218 or emailing boxoffice@racinetheatre.org.
ROLES / CASTING INFO
Looking for a diverse cast of strong singers/performers of any and all ethnicities and backgrounds. No experience is necessary to be part of the production.
Female/Female Presenting
- Mrs. Tottendale (Ages 40s – 70s): Flighty, eccentric, proper, and bossy host of the wedding. She is absolutely charming and bubbly and completely oblivious to the confusion her behavior generates in other people.
- Kitty (Ages 20s – 50s): Mr. Feldzieg’s dim-witted companion who will do anything to be a leading lady; played by Sadie Adler.
- Janet Van De Graaf (Ages early 20s – late 30s): The famous bride. Glamorous and talented star of Feldzieg’s Follies; played by rising star Jane Roberts. Conflicted about giving up her life on stage to marry Robert Martin. Some ”special skills” (acrobatics, juggling, playing an instrument, etc.) are a real plus.
- The Drowsy Chaperone (Ages 30s – 60s): Janet’s tipsy confidante and friend; played by well-established stage actress Beatrice Stockwell. She is care-free, an experienced “woman of the world” who gleefully chews the scenery and steals just about every scene she is in.
- Trix the Aviatrix (Ages 20s – 50s): The brave and brash female aviator who, by chance, is recruited to perform the wedding. She is sassy, sleek and a take charge kind of gal.
Male/Male Presenting
- Man in Chair (Ages 30s – 70s): Musical theatre aficionado who mourns the end of the Golden Era. He humorously and charmingly narrates the show as he listens to the record on vinyl.
- Underling (Ages 30s – 50s): Mrs. Tottendale’s savvy butler who is thrifty and stiff yet has an understated sense of humor.
- Robert Martin (Ages 20s – 40s): The dashing, ever-cheerful groom; played by matinee-idol Percy Hyman. He is cheesy, cheerful, and optimistic. Ability to tap dance and roller skate a plus.
- George (Ages 20s – 50s): Robert’s anxious, dim-witted best man who has Robert’s best-interest always at heart. He is loyal, sincere, and very VERY nervous. Ability to tap dance a plus.
- Feldzieg (Ages 20s – 60s): Broadway producer who is desperate for his star to return to his show; played by Jack Adler. He is nervous, sarcastic, impatient, overbearing, and insensitive.
- Aldolpho (Ages 30s – 50s): European self-proclaimed “ladies man;” played by former silent movie star Roman Bartelli. He is confident and vigorous, but also a complete buffoon.
Any Gender
- Gangsters 1 & 2 (Ages 20s – 50s): Posing as pastry chefs, this duo is intending to collect from Feldzieg; played by the vaudeville duo Tall Brothers. Full of word play and stylized movements
- Ensemble (All genders, Ages 16+) to play maids, butlers, reporters, wedding guests, and more.
