A number of years ago, Doug Clum was asked to write an arrangement for a teacher colleague’s jazz septet. It occurred to him the instrumentation – alto and baritone saxes, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, and drums – was unusual and intriguing, so he wrote an original tune for the group. That went so well, he wrote another one. And then kept on writing until had had over thirty compositions in a wide variety of styles: swing, Latin, waltz, and rock.
Septetasaurus came about as a vehicle to get these tunes “road tested” which you will get to experience during a unique night of Jean’s Jazz. Combining local artists Steve Jacob, Tom Meredith, and Paul Frederickson, along with our old friend, Mike Gudbaur who is flying up from the Carolina’s to join the fun. In addition, a couple of surprise guest stars will be adding their talents to the group, all part of a stellar ensemble of seven giants playing a night of new jazz!
Jazz, by its definition, is all about taking risks and trying something new. For over twenty years, that’s what we have done with Jean’s Jazz – bringing different forms of jazz music to RTG’s stage. In 2001, Joe Mooney created the Jean’s Jazz Series in memory of his wife, Jean, who passed away from ovarian cancer. Since then, over 22,000 people have attended our, concerts, grossing over $125,000 to benefit the Racine Theatre Guild. Jean’s love of the Guild and her love of Jazz inspired a series that has truly enriched our community.
